Two seasons after their 1917 baseball title, Chicago returned to the World Series. Their opponents, the Cincinnati Reds, entered as heavy underdogs yet went on to win the championship. The reason, however, was that eight White Sox players, including outfielder "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and pitcher Eddie Cicotte, were later found to have accepted bribes from organized crime lords to throw Series games. They were disqualified from playing professional baseball for life, despite being found innocent of all charges in a criminal trial. The incident has since become one of the more famous, or rather infamous, in baseball history and went on to inspire the motion picture "Eight Men Out."
